Abstract

The precast bridge columns have shown increasing demands over the past few years due to their advantages compared to conventional bridge columns. However, there is still lack of confidence on their application in high seismicity zones. The necessity of a comprehensive design method which includes both nonlinear stiffness and self-centring capability of post-tensioned segmental columns is unavoidable. In this study, in order to increase energy dissipation capacity of precast segmental columns continuous mild steel bars are introduced in critical areas. Yielding displacement and the maximum applicable ductility level of posttensioned segmental columns with various aspect ratio are evaluated. A displacement-based design procedure which allows increasing energy dissipation capacity and keeps the residual drift less than 1.0 is proposed. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
