It dominants from Group E to Group I which are the main hydrocarbon reservoirs in Malay Basin. A coal bed is a good indicator in structural interpretation, however the existence of coal interferes the interpretation of seismic amplitude. The coal layers distort the amplitude and frequency of underlying reservoirs. Thus the hydrocarbon reservoirs lay beneath coal beds are difficult to be interpreted due to the coal masking effect when the reservoirs are close to coal. This paper discusses the removal of coal seam using matching pursuit in a field of Malay Basin. The reflection of the coal bed is exacted and removed by matching pursuit with a Ricker wavelets dictionary. The result is used for recovering the reservoir masked by the coal bed. This method is good for amplitude interpretation, particularly in the Malay Basin where it is interbedded with coals and hydrocarbon reservoirs. © 2017 SEG. date: 2017 publisher: Society of Exploration Geophysicists official_url: https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-85121880279&doi=10.1190%2fsegam2017-17640008.1&partnerID=40&md5=156755cd44a780ba5817784e5bf16c66 id_number: 10.1190/segam2017-17640008.1 full_text_status: none publication: SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts pagerange: 2200-2204 refereed: TRUE issn: 10523812 citation: Changcheng, L. and Ghosh, D.
