The Kaikang Trough lies within the central sediment locus of the Muglad Basin, a non-marine African cratonic basin within the Central African Rift System (CARS) Two wells, KW-1 and K-4, were examined leading to the recognition of five palynological assemblage zones: K-I (earlymiddle Cenomanian), K-II (late Cenomanian), K-III (Turonian?Santonian), K-IV (CampanianMaastrichtian) and K-V (Maastrichtian). The elaterate group are peculiarly absent in otherwise rich Cenomanian palynological assemblages of the Muglad Basin. Why this is so, and the implications for the global middle Cretaceous Elaterate Province, needs some explanation. The CARS provided a range of diverse freshwater alluvial and lake-shore substrates. Its cross-continent sweep may have played a role in the evolution and dispersal of floras including early angiosperms as the rift basin of the proto-South Atlantic became a permanently flooded fjord. © 2017 AASPThe Palynological Society. date: 2017 publisher: Taylor and Francis Inc. official_url: https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-85018834786&doi=10.1080%2f01916122.2017.1303795&partnerID=40&md5=6ea2a6e97d207c5e414b37fcdd89ef32 id_number: 10.1080/01916122.2017.1303795 full_text_status: none publication: Palynology volume: 41 number: 4 pagerange: 547-578 refereed: TRUE issn: 01916122 citation: Cole, J.M. and Abdelrahim, O.B. and Hunter, A.W. and Schrank, E. and Ismail, M.S.B.
