Toluene has been measured and added gradually by pipette into the sample jar until approximately 0.02 g of Ni-TPP is completely dissolved in a 60 mL of Toluene. A magnetic stirrer is used to stir the mixture until Ni-TPP dissolves completely in Toluene for further experiment. Furthermore, the initial concentration of Ni-TPP is considered to be 0.0334. Afterwards, 2 mL of the mixture above is loaded into the reactor for ionic liquid reactions with about 0.02 g of ionic liquid. All the experiments were conducted in a 25 mL Teflon Lined Hydrothermal Synthesis Autoclave Acid Digestion Reactor for a maximum of 220°C and 3MPa of temperature and pressure, respectively. The nickel present in petroleum deposits is in the form of nickel etioporphyrin, nickel tetraphenyl porphine and etc. However, in this study nickel tetraphenyl porphine (Ni-TPP) is used as a model compound as it is representative of the porphyritic species found in crude oils. Four runs were performed with an ionic liquid at three different temperatures in a toluene environment at a constant pressure. Results of absorption of Ni-TPP as a function of reaction time at temperatures of 60 °C, 80 °C, 100 °C and 120 °C are generated. A continuous fluctuation in Ni-TPP absorption by the ionic liquid is observed for the overall reactions. At temperature 120 °C and reaction time of 30 min, Ni-TPP has been more absorbed by the ionic liquid when compared to other conditions. In addition, the results show overall Ni-TPP removal depend significantly on the change of temperature as well as reaction time. Nevertheless, the ionic liquid is capable of removing nickel from Ni-TPP.
