Biodiesel produced through the transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats are highly attractive. On the other hand, ionic liquids which possess properties that are more environmental friendly have found significant applications as solvents and catalysts for reaction and separation. It is also beginning to find its way in many of the chemical process applications and has attracted significant attention including biodiesel production. This paper provides a brief overview on the feasibility of applying ionic liquids in biodiesel production for the purpose of powering diesel engines for transportation and utility generation. The potential of applying ionic liquids as catalyst and solvent for enzymatic production of biodiesel from feedstock is particularly highlighted. © 2014 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. date: 2015 publisher: Korean Society of Industrial Engineering Chemistry official_url: https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-84920707563&doi=10.1016%2fj.jiec.2014.01.046&partnerID=40&md5=f8b3e467dfbca85ac9833f34cc60baa1 id_number: 10.1016/j.jiec.2014.01.046 full_text_status: none publication: Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry volume: 21 pagerange: 1-10 refereed: TRUE issn: 1226086X citation: Muhammad, N. and Elsheikh, Y.A. and Mutalib, M.I.A. and Bazmi, A.A. and Khan, R.A. and Khan, H. and Rafiq, S. and Man, Z. and Khan, I.
