The word "nanotechnology" has become a new jargon among public although many had no clue what "it" can do. Their optimism is based on the assumption of the potential benefits and impacts of the technology to the economy. A few studies revealed that about 50 of the public are aware about nanotechnology, although numerous nanotechnology applications are known to have the potential to be applied in many industries and currently available in the market. This study found that the level of awareness of nanotechnology in Malaysia is low compared to the developed countries. Despite the lack of knowledge on nanotechnology among the public in general, the existing nanotechnology-product users had basic knowledge on nanotechnology, considered the benefits outstripped the risks and were willing to buy nanotechnology-based products. As knowledge was the most important factor found in this study, educational advertisement through mass media could become a tool to educate and increase the awareness among public. Educating the consumers on the fundamental knowledge of nanotechnologyshould be the responsibility of the industry and supported by the government before an influx of nano-based products are introduced in the domestic market. © IDOSI Publications, 2014. date: 2014 publisher: International Digital Organization for Scientific Information official_url: https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-84896467823&doi=10.5829%2fidosi.wasj.2014.31.03.1883&partnerID=40&md5=19215710026d4d376e5fe878e92ab0e2 id_number: 10.5829/idosi.wasj.2014.31.03.1883 full_text_status: none publication: World Applied Sciences Journal volume: 31 number: 3 pagerange: 367-375 refereed: TRUE issn: 18184952 citation: Suhaimee, S. and Serin, T. and Ali, A.K. and Sulaiman, N.H. and Ghazali, Z.
