The sulfur corrosion mechanism in insulating oils remains unclear although it is believed that this phenomenon is initiated by the presence of corrosive by-products of dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS) (i.e., mercaptans and elemental sulfur). A number of models have been developed that explain the chemical reactions, formation, and deposition of copper sulfide in power transformers. Irrespective of the sulfur corrosion mechanism, monitoring the progression of sulfur corrosion in power transformers is crucial before effective countermeasures can be implemented. The capability and limitations of standard and non-standard corrosion test methods based on the quality of the insulating oils and paper insulations are extensively reviewed in this article. This sets out the ultimate goal of searching for a reliable and quantifiable online condition monitoring tool to track the progression of sulfur corrosion in transformer insulating oils in real-time and facilitate timely remedial intervention. © 1994-2012 IEEE. date: 2022 publisher: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. official_url: https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-85141489072&doi=10.1109%2fTDEI.2022.3216847&partnerID=40&md5=f67756ff049e22c3b7ba78cd64abc600 id_number: 10.1109/TDEI.2022.3216847 full_text_status: none publication: IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation volume: 29 number: 6 pagerange: 2283 – 2293 refereed: TRUE issn: 10709878 citation: Khiar, Mohd Shahril Ahmad and Ghani, Sharin Ab and Bakar, Norazhar Abu and Chairul, Imran Sutan and Talib, Mohd Aizam (2022) Sulfur Corrosion Mechanism in Power Transformers and Its Detection Techniques: A Review.
