Nevertheless, the long-term viability of these desalination facilities, especially in the Gaza Strip, continues to be a pressing issue. Therefore, it is essential to carry out a thorough evaluation of these facilities' sustainability. This study proposes a technique to assess the sustainability of Gaza desalination plants. The goal is to enable informed decision-making and address the many difficulties related to water resource management in this area. The suggested approach was implemented to analyze the southern desalination plant in Gaza as a specific instance for investigation. The approach encompasses technological, environmental, economic, social, and institutional aspects, using several multi-criteria decision analysis techniques. The framework was created using a carefully curated set of sustainability indicators, with each indication attributed to its corresponding sustainability category. Following this, were consulted to determine the relative significance of the sustainability categories and the metrics associated with them. Ultimately, a multi-criteria analysis was employed to compute the global sustainability index, yielding crucial insights into the comprehensive sustainability of the desalination facility. Ultimately, the objective of this study is to enhance the practice of sustainable water management in areas such as the Gaza Strip. This will be achieved by providing guidance for well-informed decision-making about the implementation of reverse osmosis desalination plants.
