MDC combines membrane distillation and crystallizer into one integrated unit that allows excellent recovery of clean water and high purity salt from highly concentrated salts solution (i.e., brine), which is otherwise detrimental when discharged to the environment. The process intensification addresses the limitation of standalone membrane distillation and a standalone crystallizer (i.e., temperature and concentration polarization, membrane properties) when operated as individual technology. This review discusses the fundamental of MDC focused on how the process intensification addresses those standalone units' limitations. Later, MDC's potential applications in addressing some pressing issues such as water scarcity and climate change are also evaluated. Lastly, current trends in the MDC research are discussed to project the required future developments. © 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH date: 2022 publisher: John Wiley and Sons Inc official_url: https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-85120541087&doi=10.1002%2fcben.202100034&partnerID=40&md5=63f474d3b7a76539acbcfe11915e4f4f id_number: 10.1002/cben.202100034 full_text_status: none publication: ChemBioEng Reviews volume: 9 number: 1 pagerange: 93-109 refereed: TRUE issn: 21969744 citation: Wan Osman, W.N.A. and Mat Nawi, N.I. and Samsuri, S. and Bilad, M.R. and Wibisono, Y. and Hernández Yáñez, E. and Md Saad, J.
