The mixed-method was applied by conducting 15 questionnaires and interviews. The results indicated that social presence is significantly interrelated with cognitive presence in an online learning environment. Qualitative data highlighted the importance of social presence indicators for establishing an online learning community in social presence constructs such as affective communication, group cohesion, and open communication. Besides, this study suggests silence, mutual attention, and support, and being present are the new themes being considered as essential constructs in social presence. The results implied teachers' need to create an open climate, attention to activate students' participation, and guidelines for group collaboration. Silence, mutual attention, support, and presence are essential aspects of social presence in online learning. © 2022 ACM. publisher: Association for Computing Machinery date: 2022 type: Conference or Workshop Item type: PeerReviewed identifier: Pham, C.K. and Chong, S.L. and Wan, R.
