Despite strong efforts by many developing countries, which are mostly located in temperate zones, it has been quite unclear how countries of the tropical zone are responding. This chapter delves into the characteristics of countries within the tropical zone, looking into the aspects of demography, economy, energy, and environment. The differences in geographical locations, culture, socio-economic backgrounds, politics and many other factors make it complex for simple comparison and discussion. On the technology aspect, there have been tremendous innovations and improvements in the last 20 years. The information and communication systems have grown so fast that everybody in the world can be connected together and share valuable information. Technologies related to power generation has become more efficient and more affordable. Business models have also changed to become more competitive. In other words, things of the 1990s or earlier can no longer be perceived the same today. The simplest example is the affordability for people to fly around the world. It is hoped that the information provided in this chapter would be an eye-opener on the opportunities available in tropical countries. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. %A S.A.
