Besides, microalgae can accumulate a certain amount of lipid and carbohydrate within their cells, which can be converted to biodiesel and bioethanol, respectively. There are two modes of microalgae cultivation, namely suspended cultivation (e.g., open ponds and photobioreactors) and attached cultivation (e.g., submerged system, intermittent submerged system, permeated system, and capillary-driven system). Suspended cultivation is usually adopted in large scale microalgae cultivation. However, this method is relatively energy intensive and requires complicated processes during the harvesting stage. On the other hand, attached cultivation is less energy-consuming and more environmentally benign due to low water demand and shorter harvesting time. This review is attempted to reveal the possibilities of attached growth in microalgae cultivation, including technical operation of this method and life cycle assessment. At the end of this chapter, other microalgae applications such as wastewater treatment, carbon dioxide reduction, and pharmaceutical use are proposed to be integrated with main biofuels production to enhance the process feasibility. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
