The performance of focus measures is evaluated by considering various factors that might hinder their smooth operation. These factors include illumination variation, texture reflectance, object distance variation, distance variation in between consecutive frames, and various types of noise including Gaussian, Shot, and Speckle noise. The focus measures are tested for depth estimation for 3D shape recovery using Shape From Focus (SFF) techniques. Three measures are used to compare the performance of the focus measures, namely, visual inspection as a qualitative measure and root mean square error and correlation as quantitative measures. © 2012, IGI Global. date: 2011 publisher: IGI Global official_url: https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-84899345626&doi=10.4018%2f978-1-61350-326-3.ch009&partnerID=40&md5=353ac628c7926c8c9999e3e0b5755c1a id_number: 10.4018/978-1-61350-326-3.ch009 full_text_status: none publication: Depth Map and 3D Imaging Applications: Algorithms and Technologies pagerange: 163-188 refereed: TRUE isbn: 9781613503263 citation: Malik, A.S.
