The proposed DCCB includes a mechanism to reuse the energy stored into the inductor rather than dissipating by resistors in existing technologies. This mechanism is developed by proposing a new topological structure that can be used with existing DCCBs. The proposed regenerative current breaking scheme is analogous to the regenerative braking in electric drive systems. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed through rigorous simulation results demonstrating the current breaking capability under faulted conditions in a DC network. Simulation results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed topology in terms of the current and voltage stresses on the mechanical switch; characteristics of the current breaking moment; and natures of the current and voltage in the secondary network. © 2020 IEEE. publisher: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. date: 2020 type: Conference or Workshop Item type: PeerReviewed identifier: Lumen, S.M.S. and Kannan, R. and Mahmud, M.A. and Kumar, R.
