Rapid growth and large-scale development projects have transformed Terengganu almost overnight into an economic powerhouse on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. While tourism has increased over the past 10 years, coastal erosion has become a serious problem, rising in magnitude, especially in the city of Terengganu. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that the Terengganu coastline experiences two monsoonal periods annually; namely, the southwest monsoon season (with hardly any storms), and the northeast monsoon season (with its heavy storms and high winds), that influence coastline evolution in this region. This chapter provides a historic overview of Terengganu coastal evolution, including an explanation of different factors that control these processes in this area. Coastal evolution was documented by the comparative analysis of aerial photographs for a period between 1995 and 2016. Results revealed that southern Terengganu experiences high erosion with the impact of topographic and monsoon conditions. However, locales proximal to the airport runway at Kuala Terengganu exhibit high erosion owing to anthropogenic activities, such as the construction of the purported extension of the airport runway, and inappropriate construction of coastal structures that are not compliant with integrated coastal management processes. Therefore, coastal erosion has become an obstacle to economic growth in the Terengganu region. Our results can be utilized to appropriately enforce coastal management policies in order to preserve socio-economic activities, especially on the monsoon-impacted coast. Furthermore, the ideas in this chapter can help inform decision makers with the knowledge necessary to increase sustainability. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
