The goals of ESDS research are to estimate and produce a timely warning to prevent declines in performance efficiency and to inhibit sleepiness-related accidents. We first, review different types of measures used in sleepiness detection systems (SDSs) and presents their advantages and drawbacks. Second, the review includes several techniques proposed in ESDSs to optimize the number of EEG electrodes, increasing the sleepiness level resolution and incorporation of circadian information. Finally, the review discusses future direction that can be considered in the development of ESDS. © 2013 IEEE. date: 2018 publisher: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. official_url: https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-85042864044&doi=10.1109%2fACCESS.2018.2811723&partnerID=40&md5=9db3dd7392e683802732c7b80f4665b3 id_number: 10.1109/ACCESS.2018.2811723 full_text_status: none publication: IEEE Access volume: 6 pagerange: 22908-22919 refereed: TRUE issn: 21693536 citation: Balandong, R.P. and Ahmad, R.F. and Mohamad Saad, M.N. and Malik, A.S.
