The effect of late fuel injection positions on the combustion characteristic of a two-stroke free piston linear generator engine were conducted experimentally. Three fuel injection positions namely 39, 42 and 45 mm from the cylinder head were selected. The ignition position was set at 12 mm from the cylinder head, while the equivalence ratio was fixed as 1.0. The fuel was injected at 18 bar for all the three injection positions. The results from the experimental work show that the maximum peak cylinder pressure is 40.59 bar which occurs at about 4.2 ms (time after the start of the ignition) at the injection position of 39 mm. Also the fastest rate of heat release and shorter duration of combustion occurs at the same injection position. At 45 mm injection position, the cylinder gas pressure and the rate of heat release were low, and this is due to the longer ignition delay period. © 2018 Author(s).
