In this paper, we implement a passive optical network (PON) using coherent source spatial multiplexed spectral amplitude coding (SM SAC) optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) scheme. By applying spatial multiplexing it was possible to reduce the beat noise, which is the main limiting factor of performance in coherent source SAC OCDMA system, which will lead to high speed PONs. Results showed that at a data rate of 1.25 Gb/s, there was almost three order of magnitude improvement in performance when applying SM. Additionally, the fiber span was 55 Km for the same data rate and ten active optical network units (ONU). © 2016 IEEE.
