Abstract

When in motion, a glider experiences forces and moment which may destabilize it. Typically, towing tank tests are used to determine its hydrodynamic forces and moments. In this paper, an alternative method to determine these forces and moments based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are proposed and validated analytically. In addition, the determination of added masses and inertia masses of a newly developed underwater glider based on its pure heaving and pure pitching motion are described. In conclusion, CFD simulation can be used as an alternative method to evaluate the acceleration based derivatives of an underwater glider. © 2017 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.
