Abstract

Awareness on far-field seismic effect in Malaysia is increasing; however most of the studies are focusing on the onshore areas. There are still lacks of information on the seismic effect in South East Asia (SEA) offshore where a lot of fixed platforms have been installed. Fixed jacket platforms in Malaysian water have been designed without provision to seismic load. Therefore, due to long distance seismic effect from Sumatra and raise in seismic activities, it is important to determine dynamic property especially Peak Ground acceleration (PGa) beneath this type of structure in determining the seismic impact to fixed jacket platform. This study attempts to determine the suitable seismic attenuation equation to represent ground motion prediction for South East Asia, particularly Malaysia, by comparing predicted PGa from selected attenuation with recorded values from stations in South East Asia region. Three developed attenuation models for subduction developed by Youngs, Atkinson and Boore, and Zhao have been used. Three seismic events within South East Asia region have been selected as seismicity source. The predicted and recorded PGa values have been plotted. Results indicate that the selected attenuation equations can be used to represent Malaysian water especially Peninsular Malaysia operation. © 2017 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.
