Abstract

Driven pile capacity often increases over time and this is known as pile set-up. This study is to investigate the pile set-up based on the data obtained from the expansion project in United Arab Emirate. A significant number of piles at the project fall below the required pile capacity. Instead of performing pile remedial work, the effect of pile set-up is then quantified. To evaluate pile set-up, selected piles are re-stroked and evaluated using Case Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP). The elapsed time for re-strike varied from 4 to 71 days and the mobilized capacity increased varying from 65 to 280 tons. The results are then compared with established correlation and the highest percentage difference is 25. Overall pile set-up is estimated from the correlation and 40 increment is adopted. The results show that the percentage of failed piles after incorporating set-up reduced from 35.9 to 10.3. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
