Abstract

In this paper, an improved low complexity and efficient time domain channel estimation algorithm is proposed for Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld OFDM systems. The algorithm exploits scattered pilots correlation to estimate the channel impulse response (CIR). In this method, certain combination of positive and negative sub-pilot tones is used to generate the null carriers in each OFDM symbol. This combination reduces the complexity and MSE by using the advantage of conjugate symmetric. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated under Portable Indoor (PI) and Portable Outdoor (PO) fading channel models in digital TV receivers. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides better accuracy in term of MSE over conventional frequency (LS, MMSE) and time domain (DFT-based) channel estimation techniques. It is also shown that proposed estimator has a comparable performance to Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) in low signal to noise ratio (SNR) regime.
