Abstract

The compressive strength of foamed concrete is dependent on many factors such as the sand-to-cement ratios, curing conditions, water-to-cement ratios and particle size distributions of sand. The compressive strength is inversely proportional to the sand-to-cement ratio. On the other hand, a more cost-effective mix of foamed concrete would have been produced by maximising the sand content, hence, the need for optimising the sand content in foamed concrete. In this investigation, a series of foamed concrete of four different densities ranging from 1300 to 1600 kg/m3 was produced using the appropriate mix proportions designed in the laboratory, and compressive strengths at the age of 7, 28 and 60 days were monitored. A series of sand-to-cement ratios varying from 0.0 to 2.0 for each series of density was also attempted and the corresponding volumetric proportions prepared and mixed. The resulting hardened moulded foamed concrete specimens were then tested and charts of compressive strength versus age and density for the different sand-cement ratios established. The effects of curing the moulded specimens under different conditions, namely water and air on the compressive strength of the resulting hardened foamed concrete are also presented.
