Nanotechnology isexpected to become the catalyst of the next technology revolution when the industrial and computer era began to enter the mature growth phase. The word "nanotechnology" has become a new jargon among public although many had no clue what "it" can do. Their optimism is based on the assumption of the potential benefits and impacts of the technology to the economy. A few studies revealed that about 50 of the public are aware about nanotechnology, although numerous nanotechnology applications are known to have the potential to be applied in many industries and currently available in the market. This study found that the level of awareness of nanotechnology in Malaysia is low compared to the developed countries. Despite the lack of knowledge on nanotechnology among the public in general, the existing nanotechnology-product users had basic knowledge on nanotechnology, considered the benefits outstripped the risks and were willing to buy nanotechnology-based products. As knowledge was the most important factor found in this study, educational advertisement through mass media could become a tool to educate and increase the awareness among public. Educating the consumers on the fundamental knowledge of nanotechnologyshould be the responsibility of the industry and supported by the government before an influx of nano-based products are introduced in the domestic market. © IDOSI Publications, 2014.
