Several techniques, such as Photometry, Stereopsis or Shape from shading are used for reconstructing 3D model from 2D image/s. However, in this paper, an Interactive image-based 3D modeling using Shape from shading technique is presented as it takes the least input (single image) compared to the other techniques. The Shape from Shading problem is the process of computing three dimensional shape of a surface using its shading information from a single image. The Shape-From-Shading technique has a fundamental and classical problem in computer vision. Nevertheless, this paper presents a new method for interactive Image-based 3D modeling using shape from shading for reconstruction of a 3D shape. Experimental results on several synthetic and real object images show that the proposed method reconstructs the 3D surface of objects very efficiently. © 2012 IEEE.
