Abstract

The hybrid composite consist of two or more types of reinforcing fiber in one or more types of matrices in its construction. The drilled hole on the hybrid composite may cause problems such as delamination, fiber pull out and interlaminar cracks of the holes. Upon application of the load, these problems may worsen and hence affect the tensile properties of the parts. The aim of this research is to examine the influence of drilling parameters on the damage factor (Fd) and its effect ontensile properties of hybrid fiber composites. This study involves the fabricationof4mm thick composites consisting of 55 fiber volume fraction (FVF). The fiber volume fraction consists of glass fiber and carbon fiber embedded in an epoxy resin. The drilling operation on hybrid fiber reinforced epoxy (HFRE) composite was performed by using a 5mm diameter High Speed drill bit. The holes were drilled in hybrid fiber composite at 650 rpm, 1300 rpm, 1800 rpm, 2500 rpm spindle speed and 0.05 mm/rev, 0.10 mm/rev and 0.15 mm/rev federates. The damages on the drilled hole region was assessed in terms of damage factor. Tensile test was performed on the test samples without the drilled and with drilled hole to compare the effects of damage factor on tensile properties. The results showed that damage factor increased with spindle speed and federate.Tensile strength data showed that damage factor has reciprocal effects on the tensile strength of hybrid fiber composites.
