The study is aimed to investigate whether mental imagery is a potential element in interactivity for image-based virtual reality (IBVR) environment to enhance the sense of presence. It was hypothesized that, if mental imagery exists in the participant's mind, the feel of sense of presence in the participants also will be high. A total of 31 participants took part in this study. Significant correlations were found between mental imagery and sense of presence (r = 0.94, p < 0.01). The findings report that, mental imagery in interactivity factors for IBVR environment can be used to enhance the sense of presence among users. As predicted, participants need a picture or image in IBVR environment that can influence their mind to imagine. Therefore, the sense of presence between them will be induced during the experience. © 2012 IEEE.
