Abstract

The number of publications that are related to e-learning methods in cultural heritage are increasing in current years especially after covid-19 pandemic where many academic institutions transferred to e-learning platforms to handle teaching process. This growth resulted in new trends in CH field by implementing e-learning technologies including virtual reality, 3D visualization and gamification. Various studies in cultural heritage with e-learning have been undertaken last years. However, there have been limited attempts of scientometric analysis to explore the holistic understanding of the current state of e-learning in CH research. Therefore, a need for guidance is indicated in this field to help authors to improve their future work by emphasizing current status of cultural heritage using e-learning. This study aims to perform a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer and Excel software of the available 'e-learning in cultural heritage' literature and provides an image of the research status from 2000 to Feb 2023. A number of 308 documents were extracted from Scopus database and analyzed in terms of document types, source, language, annual publication, countries including Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and keywords. The results showed that 'E-Learning', 'Cultural Heritage@' and 'Virtual Reality' were lately brought to light as popular subjects in this area, attracted academic enthusiasm, and may also represent future research opportunities. Moreover, 'Historic reservation', 'Education' and 'Augmented Reality' have been identified based on the most frequently used keywords as three important research domains that are liked with the topic. Thus, study outcomes and recommendations will be discussed and explained for the future studies. This study will contribute to the field of e-learning in CH by guiding authors and scholars for future work and trends using current state. © 2023 IEEE.
