Abstract

This paper presents the design of a web-based application for relieving stress, VReST. The application is an image-based virtual reality system which was built based on the concept of guided image therapy, one of technique used by therapist to induce relaxation in the patent. Often in traditional guided image therapy session, patient was asked to visualize an image of a beautiful and calm place and imagine him being there. In contrast, through virtual reality technology, VReST enables users to choose an image of his choice from a selection of virtual world of images; instead of imagining of being at the location, in VReST, he could virtually be at the location and explore the location. The proposed design framework of the system integrates sound, music and talk therapy to enhance the image realism and to emulate a therapy session. The virtual worlds were created using stitched photograph images taken from the actual scene. Usability evaluation results demonstrate the prototype system was relatively easy to use. Design challenges and future enhancement of the system were highlighted. © 2011 IEEE.
