Abstract

Corbel are structural members or block projecting from a wall, commonly used in industrial building to support a ceiling, beam, or the roof overhang itself. To improve the mechanical properties and flexibility of the conventional concrete, High Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composite (HPFRCC) has been introduced. This study experimentally investigates behaviour of corbels with Hybrid Fibre Reinforced Concrete (HyFRC) with the combination of steel and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibres. Experimental tests are conducted to investigate the mechanical properties of HyFRC. Moreover, a total of 4 corbels are tested under three-point bending. The primary variables of the investigation were the presence of secondary reinforcement (stirrup) and shear span to depth ratio (a/d) of 1.0 and 0.75. All the corbels failed in a stable and ductile manner. The behaviour of the corbels during testing and the analysis of the results indicate that the presence of secondary reinforcement and different a/d ratio are affecting the shear strength of the corbels, i.e. the corbel with secondary reinforcement and a/d = 0.75 showed higher displacement and load capacity than the corbel with and without secondary reinforcement of a/d = 1.0. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2021.
