An intumescent fire-retardant coating was prepared using APP-PER-MEL system. Epoxy resin was used as a binder, Ammonium polyphosphate as an acid source, melamine as blowing agent, pentaerythritol as carbon source and additives. Talc also has been used as a filler to enhance the performance of the intumescent fire-retardant coating as it has higher melting point above 1300°C which can give ceramic like silica layer as a protective shield at the surface and can protect the underlying substrate. The aimed of this work is to study the effect of talc towards the char formation and morphological structure by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Residual element obtained after burning were studied by using X-Ray Fluoresence (XRF). The result showed that by adding 5-20 talc the char morphological structure were improved compare to the formulation without talc due to the formation of ceramic like silica layer at the surface of char. The main element observed in char layer after burning were P 2O 5, MgO, TiO 2 and SiO 2 which can give char better strength and cell structure in order to protect the underlying substrate.
