The main objective of this work is to give an overview of types of pavements that have been developed to mitigate urban heat islands. The chapter includes information on methods to quantify surface temperature and heat transfer from pavement to urban temperature. Furthermore, the impacts of pavement temperature on mechanical performance are discussed. As a result, thermal cracking is found to be the most severe problem in low-temperature regions, while rutting is found to be a common problem in high-temperature regions. Moreover, this chapter provides an overview of research studies dealing with reflective, porous, phase change material, and hydronic pavements. Based on a survey of the relevant literature, future trends for pavements mitigating urban heat islands are provided. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
