Ionic liquids (ILs) with functionalised amine have been proven to give promising results in capturing carbon dioxide (CO2). However, these ILs suffer the problem of having high viscosity which makes it difficult to scale up. Impregnating the ILs into activated carbon would be an alternative to overcome the problem. In this research, two types of ILs (protic ILs and amino acid ILs) were prepared with different anions to study the effect of amine functionalised ILs for CO2 adsorption after impregnated on activated carbon. For protic ILs, the synthesized ILs were dmedahpropanoate, dmedahformate and dmedahacetate while for amino acid ILs, the ILs were vbtmagly, vbtmaarg and vbtmalys. These ILs were further impregnated on activated carbon with various loading percentage to study the optimum condition for CO2 adsorption. The adsorbent with the highest CO2 adsorption capacity from each type was further evaluated on the effect of temperature. The adsorption isotherm study was also carried out using four isotherm models (i.e. Freundlich, Langmuir, Dubinin Raduschkevich and Temkin) at 298, 313 and 333 K to study the interaction between adsorbate and adsorbent. The results obtained suggested that both of these ILs followed the Freundlich model with a good correlation coefficient (R2) value, which was 0.9944. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
